Athol Fugard

My dear friend, the late Jeremy Geidt, who was my professor at Harvard, had previously taught at the Yale Repertory Theatre, where he had invited South African actor and playwright Athol Fugard to the Yale Rep to stage Master Harold and the Boys. After Yale, the play Master Harold and the Boys went on to Broadway where it sold out for over 300 performances. Most importantly, Fugard’s play raised a needed global awareness for the atrocities of the Apartheid regime in South Africa.

Love is the only energy I’ve ever used as a writer. I’ve never written out of anger, although anger has informed love.

Master Harold and the Boys by Athol Fugard

As fascinated as I was by words on paper, it was matched by my fascination with words in people’s mouths. The spoken word. And that is the world of theatre.
