Jean de Brunhoff

I love the Babar stories and illustrations. The stories are witty, whimsical, and wonderous. Jean de Brunhoff was a scholar of the classics, and there are aspects of the Illiad and the Odyssey that are lightly hinted in the epic battle scenes between the rival armies of Lord Rataxes and King Babar.

Jean de Brunhoff was also an accomplished artist who had studied at the prestigious Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, and his skilled artisan illustrations of the Babar stories are a delight.

At Celesteville, all the elephants work in the morning, and in the afternoon they play, they go for walks, or read and dream. Babar and Celeste like to play tennis with Mr. and Mrs. Philophage.
